Context: Why do this course?

Making digital videos is brilliant. It also gives you the skills to have a digital video presence in the 21st century world.

Develop your imagination. Look for new ways to exercise your critical thinking. Learn to use some cool technology. Take creative decisions. Shape things. Work in a team. Make some new friends with shared interests. Widen your horizons. Make something really memorable! Inspire and create fresh ideas!

You'll be working with film makers, teachers and instructors the entire week who can help nurture your creative skills.

Written by a professionally trained writer, the screenplay is specially written for each group we work with. It will be darker, handling more grown up issues, as you'd expect. it will reflect the needs and sensitivities of the group. There will be a number of 'workshop' sessions prior to the filming week. This will ensure that all the complexity of needs and ideas are included.

So, here's how it works:

Day 1: 09.00 - 16.00

  • We start with 'chemistry' sessions, getting to know your strengths and the way you work

  • You will learn film language, specialist terminology, how to be creative and expressive in film production

  • We'l teach you how to how to act for screen

  • We then read the bespoke screenplay

  • We'll assign production roles

  • We'll then assign performance roles

  • There will be a short taster session, called First Day Films where you cut your teeth with a small video project

  • We'll show you how to use the digital pre-production app SyncOnSet

  • For those interested, we train you to use the drone which will be used for landscape and establishing shot filming

  • Some of you will start planning and filming the'The Making of..." project and will continue this throughout the week

  • The day will end with a planning plenary, where costumes, props and facilities will be organised for the next day

Day 2: 09.00 - 16.00

First day of shooting on location, in non-chronological order.

Day 3 and 4: 09.00 - 16.00

Shooting on location/in the studio. You will now be easing into your dual production and 'talent' (acting) roles just like a real professional .

Day 5: 09.00 - 16.00

Some of you will be doing pick-ups and re-shoots. Some will be learning post-production skills - using Final Cut X, Viddeyoze, selecting music and sound FX. You will be editing by bringing together all the footage from the week.

Then, at about 3 pm, we have a WRAP party! (Did you know that this is an abbreviation for 'Wind, Reel And Print'?)

And what next...?

premiere, that's what! Sometime in September/October, we have a

premiere evening, where we show:

  • First Day Films - see just how skilled you have become by cringing at the rather rusty films made on Day 1!

  • 'The Making of...', documentary, showing the organised chaos of the week!

  • The Trailer - a sneak-peek at what is to come

  • 'The Finished Feature'  - the main film is played to the gathered audience, live. Exciting!

After the screening, everyone gets:

  • A beautifully embossed Certificate of Skill and Participation

  • A personally engraved OSCAR-style statue celebrating and recording the technical skill they have learnt

  • Access to photographs from the Premiere evening

After the screening, some will be presented with special awards:

  • During the filming week, participants are invited to vote for the most impressive performances across a range of acting and production roles

  • Prize winners receive a Certificate of Outstanding Contribution and a further OSCAR-style trophy for showing their amazing enthusiasm, skill and helpfulness across the week

What do you get out of this course?

In the space of just five days you will have learnt about:

  • film language skills

  • planning and development requirements

  • working through both creative and talent roles

  • marked up a screenplay

  • read and understood the demands of the screenplay

  • used several digital pre-production apps.

  • been instructed in using digital/technical equipment safely and creatively

  • been trained in 'acting for screen'
